Why did I venture out to Brooklyn for yarn you might ask? This store got what i called the perfect "workhorse" yarn. Here is how this whole thing started.

School is over for about about a month and I've been planning my summer knits (a.k.a.Christmas 2014 knitting). My friend who lives in Los Angeles has two lovely sons, 6 and 4, perfect for handsome looking itty-bitty aran sweaters right? But as i was doing my research on yarn choices, i couldn't seem to find the yarn for these projects. I tend to pick machine washable wool for children project, but again these people lives in LA, 100% wool will be WAY too warm for them. When i started looking at other options, there aren't many washable wool that aren't a) super expensive, b) blend with cotton cos the garment will droop. As i was about to give up, Ravelry came to the rescue. I did a search in the local page forum and many people suggests Vintage@ by Berroco, which is an acrylic, wool and nylon blend. The fiber content is mainly wool, the nylon was added to give sturdiness for many many washes to come (also it will help the garment to hold up its shape after a while). Of course, good things don't come easily. The only yarn store(s) carries this yarn is in Brooklyn. I am boycotting certain yarn store on the upper west side (they also have this line, but they charge tax, there shouldn't be any tax on yarn and knitting tools; and the staff was rude).

The store in Brooklyn is called Argyle Yarn. Opened only two years ago by this knitting enthusiast couple. The store is very welcoming and homey. I think they did a good job filling the void of a good workhorse yarn. Yarn stores in New York city usually fall into either one of these two categories: 1) posh looking store that only carries artisan yarn, i mean isn't a hand knitted sweater should cost way less than a store bought sweater in the same fiber anyway!?; 2) ugly craft stores which sell big cones of acrylic or novelty yarns. You can find workhorse yarn in some of the stores in the first category, but color choices are very limited and the staff usually pushes you into the pricey stuff. Check out their Facebook page. Highly recommended and totally worth the trip :)

On a side note, FINALLY bound off and blocked the Rodeo Drive Poncho. Knitted with Knitpicks Capra, lovely Cashmere and Merino blend.
It’s been a while since my last blog post. The truth is I was taking a little knitting break.
When I mean “break”, i really mean break. Haven’t touched my needles for two months.
Too much going on and happening at the first couple of weeks of school of spring semester, rehearsals+concerts… the usual.

Back in January I was back in Hong Kong for two weeks, with a short side trip to Taipei. Being the OCD Libra, I of course had planned ahead exactly what I am going to knit on the dreadful 16-hour flight, plus the two weeks I was there. In two weeks (actually 10 days plus the flight), i finished a sweater vest tunic dress (?) for my fabulous mother. I came across that pattern during one of the endless pattern search where u typed “sweater” in the Ravelry search box. The pattern is called Atmos, it can be purchased as a stand-alone pattern or part of a pattern collection ebook.

Ok need to admit my first impression to this wasn't so appealing, the cap sleeves are a tiny bit snow-white-ish; the buttons are not my personal favourite. But this pattern is easily adjustable so i'd decided to give it a go. Actually what i did was exactly changing what I don't like–86 the cap sleeves, shorten the collar and new buttons. So voila, here is the finish product. I did not know how this turned out because i literally bind-off and put it on the blocking board in the very last day when i was in Hong Kong. My mother's staff sent me the photo of the finished cardigan/dress/sweater vest a week ago.

P.S. On a side note, my first doctoral degree recital is going to be this thursday (26/3) @12pm, at The Staller Center for The Arts Recital Hall in Stony Brook University. Featuring solo and chamber works by Bennett, Cage, Donatoni, Volans & Kagel. $Free Admission =)

I know...i know it's been a while since my last post but these past couple of weeks has been crazy/hectic/sense-of-contentment/exciting. Remember in my last post I was speed knitting 7 hats? For some reason that turns into 13 (and counting). Now all of the guys from my studio at school are really warm as we have been experiencing some nasty weather here in New York. I am not gonna post all of the hats here though, they are all pretty simple patterns, you know knitting for guys and whatnot. But i did personalize them a little bit. I had so much fun making all these hats in different kinds of stripes, both planned and unplanned. These four hats probably can give you the gist of what my Christmas knitting 2013 look like.

One thing I do want to point out about making hats for guys, the "instant cuteness formula" is all about the big poofy pompoms on top. Yep... go ahead and invest in those mysterious Japanese pompom makers. It is the cherry on top (so to speak); and you would think guys are gonna be all queasy about that pompom, but in the course of seeing my recipients' faces brighten up when they got their hats, i think they really like the pompoms.

For those of you out there who are absolute color work fair isle addict, I urge you to go to amazon.com or your local yarn/book store and buy this book. This Traditional Fair Isle Knitting by Sheila McGregor totally save my life, especially gift knitting. If you have a good basic pattern for hats, socks or mittens or whatever, and you share the passion of fair isle knitting with the many of us, the hundreds and hundreds of motifs, borders and charts in this book will keep your hands busy. Also being the history buff that i am, this book also gives a detail account on the history part of fair isle knitting.

For those of you who aren't addicted to fair isle yet, you will after you read this book.

Stay warm :)
But i have been super busy with schools as the semester is about to finish.

That being said, this Thanksgiving weekend is perfect for some relaxing time and knitting.
My Oh-so-expanding-Christmas-knitting list is getting lonnnnnnnnnger. I promised to all of the guys at the percussion studio for some hats. As the matter of fact over this weekend, I finished two hats already and i am dying to post the pictures here but i want the guys to be surprised, so i have to be hush hush about these 7 hats i am about to knit. 2 down, 5 more to go.
I'll post the hats with its recipients wearing them in a week or so.
Good thing about all of my Christmas knittings is they are all small items. Hats, mittens, gloves etc...I can probably finish each project within two days of knitting.

My lovely Chevrons sweater is finished! It should have been blocked sooner. I ended up not attaching the buttons on the collar. I kinda like it as a pseudo-shawl collar, plus i am gonna wrap myself in a chunky scarf anyway. I think i am gonna do another sweater for this season but i don't know if i will have the willpower to do an huge aran cable sweater..we'll see.

On a side note, just before thanksgiving break i finally gave the little baby sweater, named Latte Baby Coat by Lisa Chemery, to my old teacher at NYU at a concert. He just became a father few months ago, i am anticipating myself knitting tons of little baby knits for him. This was such an easy pattern. Do not let the hood intimidate you, the instructions are very well written. The only real tricky part is the basket weave stitch on the button band. You're basically doing a 2x2 Cable WITHOUT using a cable needle. I know this sounds very complicated and the instructions are clear, but it's one of those things that you will need to watch a video or see someone do it in person to get it. Maybe i should do a video of it. Mmm..
So what have I accomplished? Finished the sleeves of my Icelandic sweater, woven in all of the ends and block it. (Blocking means washing and just let it dry).

Started another sweater, Chevrons by Terri Kruse. ( ok before all of you think i m knitting a ladies' sweater, this sweater i think is completely unisex. There are no short rows at the bust area to fit any perky bosoms). I am knitting this in my new favorite yarn, Knitpicks City Tweed HW in Obsidian and Tahitian Pearl. It is pure coincidence that my last 4 projects are all knitted out of City Tweed either in DK or HW. Here are the photos of the Icelandic sweater and my itty-bitty chevrons sweater.

On a note on blocking, I don't know the exact scientific magic behind that, but washing your finished knitted items, and let it dry flat is very important. Think of it as the final step for your knitted item to transform to a masterpiece. People often asks me how my knits look so "store bought", and well i think the answer is in the blocking process.

After doing some research, turns out adding moist or water to animal fiber or, in this case wool, will give each individual stitches some room to move around. This allows the stitches to adjust to the surrounding stitches, ergo, it will even out the tension. If you do any sort of color work knitting or lace knitting, you will absolutely need to block your finish garment. The end result is mesmerizing.

I'll be off to a percussion conference in Indianapolis for the next four days. Totally gonna pack my sweater, plus my work-in-progress Chevrons sweater. Bye for now :)
It
seems that the majority of many fashion trends are about skinny fit snug fit
garment, for those who know me personally I am an absolute advocate for the
skinniest shirts, most tapered jeans. It is fairly difficult for me to find a
sweater that fits me perfectly in the stores, especially most mens size S or
even XS are too baggie on me.

This
week on my knitting needles I am knitting myself (about time right!) a
traditional Icelandic sweater in a bulky gauge (3.25 sts per inch). I came across
this pattern by accident when I was searching something a baby sweater pattern
for my friend’s baby. Óðinnby Ragga Eiriksdottir is a traditional Icelandic Lopapeysa knit. The
instruction comes with both the traditional bottom-up and top-down style. I
chose to knit the top-down method because I can try it on as I knit and
increase to my chest measurement. Note that there are some inconsistencies in
the pattern, but any knitter who has prior sweater knitting experience can
easily correct the mistake.

I
knit this sweater using Knitpicks Biggo, which is a 50% Superwash Merino, 50%
Nylon blend. I would recommend this yarn to anyone with sensitive skin. My skin
is so sensitive that I cannot even wear fine merino, but with this yarn I don’t
have this problem. Plus this yarn got a good drape and make a light and warm
yet durable sweater. If you are knitting the smaller sizes, you are going to
have 3 skeins of the main color leftover, with amount of yarn given on the
pattern. I only used 3 skeins of the main color (in my case is the black); 1.5
skeins of the contrasting color 1 (charcoal) and 1 skein of the contrasting
color 2 (light gray). I’d probably knit or crochet a chunky scarf or cowl out
of the 3 leftover skeins. Any ideas?
With
the weather here in New York changed drastically overnight, I finished this
sweater in merely three days and just in time for the perfect sweater season. I
promise this is the last post you’re gonna see me posting fall colors pictures
here, but they are just so stunning and inspiring. I might knit a cable
cardigan out of the red.

p.s. i'll put in the seam in the poncho sometime this week..obviously got carried away with this sweater....color work can be so addictive :p
The fall colors here are absolutely stunning and inspiring.

Obviously I love to knit in public, especially when you have 4 hours everyday on the train.
I do not mind people come up to me and ask questions, in fact I would love to answer whatever you have in mind about this lovely craft.
But for some strange reasons, I saw the urge in people's eye of asking me about knitting on the verge of bursting out, but they never did. I almost want to print and laminate a sign that reads "Free Knitting Lesson" while i am knitting. I almost feel like as if i were one of the chimpanzees at the zoo with the sign "Don't feed the animals". Oh well.

Meanwhile on my needles, i have finished the Runrig Muffatees fingerless mitts for my dear friend Becky, in the lovely Knitpicks City Tweed DK in Kitten colorway (Photos will be posted later). I highly recommend this pattern for Christmas gift knitting. Her pattern is so well written and easy to follow. This pair of mitts is also very economical, one 50gram skein makes one pair! I think i finished them in two days.

At the same time, I have finished the knitting portion of the poncho. This might be the biggest piece of stockinette fabric I have ever knitted. It's now being blocked and waiting for the seaming. You notice that in the picture it's even longer than my blocking board. The yarn turns out to be super drapey and soft.

Can't wait to put the shoulder seam in, soooo close to finish this 💪

Stay tuned!

Commuting almost every day for 2 hours on the Long Island Railroad really turns my knitting-as-a-hobby to a little knitting factory.

Many of the knitters on Ravelry asked if i have a blog so they can know what i have been knitting and updates on my original designs.

For those of you who don't know me, I am Matt. I live in New York and working on my doctorate in music performance. I was introduced to crochet by a very close friend of mine and not long after i discovered knitting. I have been knitting for almost 2 years. I find it very de-stressing and liberating.
I love music and knitting, can't imagine my life without them, so i decided to blog about my life.

I also designed some of the knit wear occasionally, they are available for purchase and download at my account at Ravelry

So Right now on my needles i am knitting the Easy Folded Poncho by Churchmouse Yarn and Tea
This is the perfect commute/netflix/dummy knitting. You're essentially knitting a rectangular stockinette fabric. Don't worry guys this poncho is not for myself. But this is a very nice design, simple design with an optional cowl neck and I have chosen Knitpicks City Tweed DK in obsidian. It's gonna be super lofty and warm.

Here is a photo of where i am now, just started with my third skein(6 more to go), I can't wait to see the final product :)
Meanwhile, just in time for the holidays knitting season begins, i am almost done writing my snowflake fair isle mittens pattern. Stay Tuned.
